Music History 1
(Classical Music to 1800 & related folk musics)

Purpose of Class:
Listen to a lot of classical music from the years before 1800, including live concerts during class.

Read & write about the roots of the classical tradition (including music of the Americas).


Required Textbook: 
Russano Hanning, Barbara. Concise History of Western Music. 5th edition. New York: Norton, 2014.

Mon     Dec 11 (work on take home final)

Wed     Dec 13 (work on take home final)

Mon     Dec 18  (take-home Final Due, last day to accept any assignment late)

How will this class be graded?
You will have 9 writing assignments (one is the Take-Home Final). 10% each x 9 = 90%

You will do one presentation for the class (10% in class on November 6, no makeups).


You will be asked to stay awake, take notes, read, listen, sing (in a group),

and dance (in a group) a bit during the 22 classes.
(If you are absent, or you refuse to participate, I deduct 5% each day).
